Mrs Bryan’s Bright Bunch

A blog to keep you up to date with what’s happening in our class

This blog

Hi all, thankyou for visiting this blog.
This blog is being ‘retired’, at least for the immediate future as my class and I are using edmodo now. I think that there are still several useful resources on the various pages here, so the blog will remain active for as long as edublogs will host it. Hope you find it useful :)

E-books

Check out the free Oxford owl site at the link below. It has loads of free ebooks for children aged up to 11 years old. They’re fast to load and have an audio option too.

JP Yard Working Bee

Preparaton for our working bee is well underway. The cubby and fort have been ordered. Yesterday Bev Tonkin and I went to Coromandel Native Nursery and ordered 65 plants. Tomorrow we are planning to visit another nursery to order more plants. This week we will be ordering the pine for the playground surround and the dolomite road base for the cubby house and fort base as well as for the paths. We hope to see you there on Saturday June 4th from 10am -4pm. The more the merrier!! :)

Online maths

Check out the virtual interactive library for lots of cool activities and useful interactives.

Mid term already!!!

This term is flying by!!!
Don’t forget that swimming begins next week. Students need to bring a towel, their bathers and a rash top or old t-shirt to wear in the pool.

Our class spoke today about the quality of some of their writing and discussed how we can make our sentences much more interesting, using richer language. We have agreed that homework sentences should be really neatly written, using tails or linked script, and should be of a high quality. To this end, students will only have 5 spelling list words next week. They will choose either revision words, (from words they have misspelt,) or interesting words from a dictionary. They should still spend about the same time as usual on this homework, given that they will be putting a lot more effort in.
Next week the class will have Jenni Bayliss. I will be spending Tuesday and Wednesday around Adelaide in maths conferences before heading to Melbourne on Wednesday night for a 4 day conference on IB (Thursday to Sunday.)
Have a happy and safe long weekend :)

Slideshow

Wow…what a busy start to term we’ve had. Hopefully you’ll be able to see what we’ve been up to in the slideshow.

Welcome back

Welcome back! I hope that you had a happy and safe break and that you enjoyed the time with your children. I have jotted a few notes that hopefully will cover the frequently asked questions.

Homework: The recommended time for Years 4 & 5 is Monday to Thursday, up to 30 minutes each night. This includes reading and other work related to what the children have been learning in class.

Children are expected to record in their diary what they do and the time taken. Parents are also asked to sign the Diary each week. These should be placed on my desk each Monday. Homework is due each Thursday.

1. Practice your spelling words daily using the Look, Say, cover, Write, Check method, or by writing your words in the air then writing them in your book and checking them – or go to a website suggested on our spelling page.

2. Use all of your spelling words in interesting sentences.

3. Learn the times tables using the 3 tick test or other method – or go to a website recommended on our maths page, brainteaser page.

4. Reading

Tissues: Each student is requested to bring a family size box of tissues for class use.

Swimming: We will be participating in swimming lessons early this term. Look out for an invoice and associated forms in the next week or so.

Labelling: Your child has been provided with a set of textas, coloured pencils, a ruler and a sharpener. It is in your interests to clearly label these and store them in a labeled pencil case as these items will not be replaced by the school during the year. You are also most welcome to personalize homework books and diaries by covering them. Please make sure they are clearly labeled though. Covering of other books will occur at school.

Pencil cases: Your child will need a smallish pencil case, designed to fit in the equipment mentioned above. The size of the book trays does not allow for oversized pencil cases.

Student absence: If your child is away for any reason we require a note stating the date and reason for our roll book records. Please ensure that these notes are not written in the diary, but on a separate piece of paper that we can store in the roll books.

Year 4-5 team: We work quite closely together to improve consistency across the classes and have already spent considerable time meeting and planning for the year.

Class information: Our class blog is the main method of communication. Sometimes notes will be sent home or information will be written by your child in their diary. It is easy to subscribe to our blog by visiting www.bryanclass.edublogs.org, and entering your email information in the box marked ‘subscribe’.

I hope to see you all on 15th February at Acquaintance night. If you have any queries before then please feel free to come in and see me.

Here’s to a successful and happy 2011.

Kind Regards,

Juli

Check out Sweet Search – a search engine for students that searches only the sites that have been reviewed and approved by a team of librarians, teachers, and research experts.

Try building a collage of your year in review. Use online sites like Picassa or masher to automatically create a collage of your favourite photos, or use Publisher or PowerPoint to do it yourself.
