Handwriting

We use South Australian pre cursive script. The idea behind this is that it encourages an easy transition to linked script as the writer becomes faster and more proficient.

At this stage, as well as actual letter formation, we are encouraging correct posture, (bottom well back in chair, feet flat on the floor and slightly apart, head correct distance from the paper, back slightly flexed forward, non-dominant hand stabilising the page, paper correctly slanted). This is important in terms of achieving speed and efficiency.

We encourage legibility-formation, spacing, shape, size and slope; aesthetic appeal-can it be easily and quickly read? Is it attractive and pleasing to view?; speed and fluency-is the writer developing an automatic style?

We also encourage a pencil grip that is not too close to the point, not too tight, and one that doesn’t push too hard on the paper. However, by the time a child reaches school age it is very difficult to correct an incorrect pencil grip.
