Homework

Reading

Your child would really benefit if you could hear them read to you for about 5-10 minutes each week night. There is no need to record each book that they read to you, however if you would like to send us a note please use the communication book provided. If you are used to recording each book title and putting a smiley face etc for your child to see I can provide a book for this purpose if you are unable to. (You can usually purchase books very cheaply from Office works, Big W etc for about 1c each). Please see me if you need me to provide one for you. This book could then be kept at home for you and your child to share.

Your child may also bring home a list of sight words to read. These should be instantly recognised, not sounded out. If your child is able to very quickly tell you the word, without sounding the letters individually, then please tick the word. When  your child gets 3 ticks for each word on the list, and can instantly tell us the words at school, we will provide them with an updated list. If your child is already reading fluently, then they don’t need sight words as they can already read them. So, don’t be distressed if you can’t find any :)  We hope to get these lists up an running in week 3. At this stage we are considering where best to put them, but we may use the back of the Communication Book.

Spelling

Each week your child will be given a list of spelling words. We find that one of the best ways for your child to learn these is to participate in many class based activities using them and to also write them each night for homework. To facilitate this we provide a homework book for this purpose. The book is organised at school and only has enough room on each page for you child’s work. In order to help your child be organised, if you would like to write a note to us please use the communication book. Each page is divided like this at school during our first spelling lesson of the week – usually on a Monday. We recommend the following pattern be used to optimize your child’s chances of success in Friday’s dictation and spelling test. This may vary a little from the note that we recently sent home – but you get the picture :)
