Mrs Bryan’s Bright Bunch

A blog to keep you up to date with what’s happening in our class

Botanic Gardens and Market

Don’t forget that this Wednesday we are going to the Botanic Gardens and Central Market as part of our inquiry into Field to Table. Thank you to the many parents who have offered to come and help us at the market. See you there :)

Also on Thursday it is our Jump off Day. Please remind your child to wear comfy clothes and shoes for this.

Show Day Reminder

Our Show Day is scheduled for Friday, 11 September 2009. OSHC will be open if there are at least 25 bookings. Please book your place ASAP to help ensure that OSHC is available for your children.

Bee Safe on Bikes

On Tuesday we had our first session of Bee safe on Bikes. The children all had a great time. They learnt how to put on their helmets correctly, make sure their clothing was safe for riding and see how to get on the bike safely. Once on and ready they rode up and back showing their stopping skills. When they had done this successfully they played a stopping game. Everyone was very proud of their achievements. Check out the photos below to see the fun that they had! Our bike lessons will continue for another 3 weeks each Tuesday. Don’t forget to bring your bike and helmet! Also, dont forget to wear comfy clothes and shoes. We found that skirts don’t work very well when riding a bike!
The last photo is of one of the activities that our class did for BookWeek. Each day we visited a different class for a special activity.

Bee Safe on Bikes

This is a note to remind you that the Bee Safe on Bikes Program begins tomorrow (Tuesday). The lessons will continue each Tuesday for four weeks until the last session on Tuesday, 15 September.

Please organise for your child to bring their bike and bike helmet for each of these sessions. Our lesson is at 10.15-11am. Bikes will be stored outside our classroom under the verandah. You are more than welcome to come and collect your child’s bike after our lesson if you wish.

It is a great opportunity for children to become more confident on their bikes and learn some important safety ideas.

Book Week

sally heinrich

Author and Illustrator Sally Heinrich will be visiting our school during Book Week next week, and our class will meeting her on Wednesday morning at 11.30am. You can explore her books and a gallery of her artwork at the Sally Heinrich website.

Along with the special lunch on Tuesday and our guest author and artist on Wednesday, we have a lot more in store…..

Each day the children are able to participate in a quiz based on some of the book week short listed books. To enter simply go into the library and answer the question for the day and put your entry into the box for your chance to win a great prize.

On Friday we celebrate Book Week and Grandparent’s Day. Children dress up as a favourite  character and we will have a parade in the morning at 9.30. Special guests are welcome to join us in the classroom before the parade to share a book with the children.

After the parade the children have a special song to sing to all the Grandparents and special family friends.

There will be a morning tea provided at recess time for you to enjoy as well.

Hope you can come along and enjoy the day!

Week 5

What a week we’ve had!

The children really did themselves proud last night when they shared their knowledge about their country with you. It was great to hear all the positive comments! As parents you all did a wonderful job of helping your child through the process of an oral presentation, prompting them with questions – some of them quite tricky!! I believe this is an important part of PYP, and a skill that your children will certainly develop and become comfortable with over time.

Our next Unit of Inquiry is ‘ Field to Table’. I have added a page down the left sidebar under the PYP page. It has lots of web resources as well as all the information you need about the unit. We will be starting this unit next week and hope to begin our Veggie Patch next Thursday. I’m ordering the stuff that we need tonight :) Thanks Mr Bayly for helping to fund this…and for helping to organise the preparation of the site!

The children really enjoyed all of the science activities they were involved in this afternoon, and most had some interesting things to take home. Thanks to H’s Mum who came and helped me run the 4 activities in my room. I would have loved to share photos with you – but I was a bit busy to take photos :)

Next Tuesday is Bee Safe on Bikes. Children will need to bring their bikes to school in the morning. We will park them under the verandah outside our room.

Next Friday is Grandparents Day for Book Week -  the theme is Book Safari and we are encouraging all children to dress up to celebrate. They can dress up as any book character (or movie if you get stuck!) but we discourage Superheroes as the children can get a bit too excited and silly.

Currently I have 3 helpers for the trip to the market – the yellow note that went home on Wednesday night. I would love to have at least 1 more so that we can form groups of 5. Ideally I would like to have 2 or 3 more volunteers to form groups of 4.

Thankyou all for returning your notes so promptly – I know that it has been a really busy time lately and it certainly helps me a lot if I don’t have to chase notes!!

I will be out on Monday morning (Janita will be taking the class) but I will be in at 12.

Science Week and IBPYP

Cooking for science weekWell, we’ve had a busy start to the week with cooking on both days so far!

Yesterday we made fruit skewers and pancakes. The children particularly enjoyed the fruit skewers, with one child who rarely eats fruit telling me that he really liked it!!!…a breakthrough perhaps?

Today we had a true science experiment moment when we tried to bake bread. The dough hook came apart from the mixer, consequently the first loaf did not bake at all well!! However we persisted and problem solved what went wrong and the second loaf worked out very well :) We also made butter to spread on the bread…the photos show the amount of effort the children put into the shaking of the jar!

Yesterday we experimented with shadows and light. You migh still be able to see our recording on the netball court! We also investigated how to make a shadow disappear. We did this inside using torches.

Today we began planning the Vegetable Garden that we are going to make outside our classroom. This links with our next 2 units of inquiry ‘ Field to table’ and ‘My body, My job’. On that, we are looking for a milking cow close to the school that we could visit to see it being milked. If you know of anyone who could help us with this please let me know. :)

We will be practicing presenting our country information at our Country Expo tomorrow ready for tomorrow (Wednesday) night. I look forward to seeing you there.

SOS

Desperately seeking plastic drink bottles with lids (like soft drink bottles). They’re needed for Thursdays Science Week activities. I need about 21 of them please – and I forgot and did my recycling on the weekend! Many thanks :)

Science Week Reminder

To celebrate Science week all of the year 1-2 students are participating in a special science afternoon this Thursday. The children will be able to choose 3 different activities across the 4 classes. We have also got some special activities planned in the technology/ science room for the whole school to expereince in class groups. It should be a fun and exciting week!

SOS – I am still seeking helpers for Thursday afternoon!!! Please see me if you are available to help.

Jump Rope For Heart

Jump Off day will be held on Thursday of Week 7 at 1.50pm (weather permitting).

Jump Off Day is a wonderful way for our older students to lead the younger students in some fun and healthy activities using jump ropes.

Information and sponsorship forms were sent home with children last week. Sponsorship money is due by Friday, Week 1, Term 4. This year you are  offered an easier way to get sponserships organised by going on line. This process has been highly recommended by parents at our school – apparently its really easy :)
