Reading levels 8-15

Level 8-15
The Books
  • Some words repeat often.
  • Pictures provide less support.
  •   Several lines per page with longer, more complex sentences.
The Learning Points
  • Children are becoming more confident in using a variety of reading strategies.
  • Children are using meaning, structure and visual information cues to identify and comprehend words.
  •  Children are able to recognise many more words.
  •   Children are beginning to think about what they have read. (Does it make sense?)
  • Children will try to self correct if it doesn’t make sense.
  •  Children are able to sound more complex words and can break words into ‘chunks’ or syllables to tackle them.
Helping your child
  •  Read with your child regularly.
  •  Let your child look at the pictures.
  •   Listen as they read to you.
  •  When your child comes to an unknown word WAIT. Let them work it out if they can. If after a short time they are unsuccessful, remind them of the strategies they can use. Pictures, sounding out, start again and read the whole sentence to see what makes sense, read on to the end of the sentence and try again.

THIS STAGE IS CRITICAL TO MAKING SURE THAT THE HABIT OF READING FOR MEANING IS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED.  :)
