Sight Words

Sight words are words that are commonly used, but have tricky spellings and are not able to be sounded out. Some examples include, said, done etc. There are a few different lists of sight words, but they mostly contain the same words in a different order.

Your child will have been working through a list of sight words in previous years, and some will continue to do so this year.

Here are some ideas for activities that you can do at home to develop sight word knowledge in your child.

  • Memory or Go Fish- played with 2 sets of cards
  • Snap
  • Look for sight words in your child’s reader before or after reading with them
  • Write words onto a card and cut in half lengthways. Help your child to match up the words.
  • Roll a dice. Pick up that many cards. If they can say the word they keep the card.
  • I spy – write at least 3 sight words while your child isn’t looking. On hearing you say the word they find the word.
  • Get your child to look through magazines and newspapers and circle words they know.
