Our kids are amazing!

December5

As I reflect on the last few weeks: PYP Exhibition; Dance Night; Genius Hour; I can’t help but be impressed with the children we are raising.
This coming week reports will go home.
The thing is though, we only grade the academics. We don’t grade passion, empathy, how great kids are at helping each other, their emerging sense of humour, their vast general knowledge, their ability to look at the world, see a problem and grapple with possible solutions. We don’t grade their resilience, their ability to collaborate, or the way that they can brighten our day.
Sure, we may give an indication of effort, we may even comment on these if we have space, but often the grades are the stand out things, the things that parents, and kids, look for and compare.
So, when reports arrive, remember a few things. Firstly, a letter on a report does not define you or your child, they are so much more than a letter that compares them to a list of predetermined standards; secondly, there are many different pathways to success and success can be measured in many different ways.
Each and every one of my students amaze me, they are so much more than I was at their age, and they are a tribute to the loving families that raised them. It’s been a privilege to have them in my class in 2014.
Hope to see you on Tuesday at Celebraton Night.
Merry Christmas and enjoy time spent as a family.

That was the most beautifully worded article and it brought tears to my eyes. You are right we shouldn’t define our children on one thing, they are amazing and so knowledgeable and passionate.
After going on the Zoo excursion recently and any time I have interacted with this class they have astonished me with their polite manner and the beautiful, caring way they interact with each other and adults.
The children have been so lucky to have you as a teacher this year and I am sure they will always look back on this year as a very special one.
